About Bismuth

Bismuth is a silvery metal with very high density. It is among the oldest known elements on our planet which has been used for at least 1,500 years. The name of this element takes sources from a German expression meaning white mass. Bismuth can be extracted from a few ores which can be found on the surface of our planet. It has no biological importance and is not toxic. Bismuth is used in various chemical compounds and alloys with a large number of other metals like tin, copper, cadmium, lead, etc., for a variety of purposes like producing fire extinguishers and detectors, soldering components, electric fuses, pigments, and others. It can be used as the source of fuel for nuclear reactors and also this element plays a role for medical treatments of such conditions as eye infections, peptic ulcers, and some others.
